Peter Murrell, former Scottish National Party Chief and spouse of ex-First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, faces charges related to a lengthy probe into the party’s finances, according to a statement from Police Scotland. The 59-year-old was arrested again after being previously detained last year, then released pending further inquiry. Following over nine hours of questioning, he was formally charged and later released from custody. Police have been examining SNP’s financial affairs since 2021. Murrell, who served nearly 24 years as SNP’s chief executive, resigned in March last year. Nicola Sturgeon, who stepped down unexpectedly as SNP leader and first minister in February last year, and the party’s former treasurer Colin Beattie were also arrested in 2023 but released without charge pending further investigation.
