Co-Founders of Tornado Cash Indicted in U.S. for Alleged Involvement with North Korean Hacking Group

CryptoCo-Founders of Tornado Cash Indicted in U.S. for Alleged Involvement with North Korean Hacking Group

The United States has indicted Roman Semenov and Roman Storm, co-founders of the cryptocurrency platform Tornado Cash, for their alleged involvement with the platform and its work for a North Korean government-linked hacking group. The charges include conspiracy to commit money laundering and sanctions violations. This comes one year after the U.S. Treasury banned Tornado Cash, accusing it of supporting North Korea.

Roman Storm, a naturalized U.S. citizen and resident of Washington state, was arrested in connection with the charges. A lawyer for Storm expressed disappointment with the charges and stated that Storm disputes engaging in any criminal conduct.

Roman Semenov, a Russian citizen, was sanctioned by the Treasury Department but is not in U.S. law enforcement custody at this time. The charges raise questions about the legal implications for software developers in similar cases.
