U.S. Continues Chip Sales to Middle East Despite Export License Changes for AI Chips

AI/MLU.S. Continues Chip Sales to Middle East Despite Export License Changes for AI Chips

The Biden administration hasn’t halted chip sales to the Middle East, despite recent export license changes for AI chips, as per the United States Department of Commerce. Both Nvidia and AMD received notifications about these changes but didn’t disclose if they applied for licenses. Nvidia expressed concerns about potential exclusion from the Chinese market due to these controls. The U.S. initially implemented export controls to curb China’s development of advanced AI systems using U.S.-made semiconductor chips. Other countries, including the Netherlands and Japan, followed suit, restricting semiconductor equipment exports to China. The United Kingdom, France, and Germany are also contemplating stricter scrutiny of Chinese foreign investment in key AI sectors. China, in response, plans to regulate the export of vital materials for AI chip production.
