Jorgo Goro, appointed acting mayor of Himara amidst tensions between Albania and Greece due to his opponent’s arrest, has been detained over suspicions of illegally transferring state land. Albania’s Court Against Corruption and Organised Crime ordered Goro’s indefinite detention following his recent arrest for alleged abuse of office, a charge he denies. His electoral rival, Fredi Beleri, accused Goro of corruption involving state assets, alleging that Goro, with the help of subordinates and cadastral officials, unlawfully transferred state land to private individuals using forged documents. The land is reportedly held by a company owned by Artan Gaci, husband of Socialist Party MP Olta Xhacka. Beleri, also facing legal troubles, won the Himara election but was prevented from taking office, sparking a diplomatic dispute with Greece.
