Global law firm Clyde & Co received a £500,000 ($635,613) fine on Thursday for numerous violations of money laundering regulations involving a longstanding client, referred to as Company A. The London-founded firm admitted to insufficient due diligence on 14 transactions with the shipping industry client between 2014 and 2018. Clyde & Co expressed regret for compliance failings identified in 2018, reporting them to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). The firm has since strengthened its risk management and regulatory compliance. The fine equals the previous record imposed on Locke Lord in 2017. SRA Chief Executive Paul Philip emphasized the penalty as a wake-up call for firms neglecting anti-money laundering processes. In August, Clyde & Co and former chair Ed Mills-Webb were referred to an independent tribunal for money laundering regulation non-compliance. Last month, they admitted the breaches, with Mills-Webb fined £11,900. Clyde & Co had previously been fined £50,000 in 2017 for money laundering and accounting rule violations in 2013. The firm asserted improvements in internal processes occurred before Company A became a client.
