Vietnam Deputy Minister Arrested in Oil Trading Corruption Case

Fraud, Bribery & CorruptionVietnam Deputy Minister Arrested in Oil Trading Corruption Case

Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Do Thang Hai, has been arrested on charges of bribery, power abuse, and mismanagement of state assets related to an ongoing case involving an oil trading company. Hai, who has served as the ministry’s deputy minister since 2014, is accused of receiving bribes and is currently under investigation by the Ministry of Public Security.

The Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission revealed violations by Hai and other officials regarding the issuance of policies for solar and wind power development and fuel business approvals. This arrest is part of a broader case involving corruption and mismanagement at the Xuyen Viet Oil Travel and Transport Trading Company.

Other individuals implicated in the case include Le Duy Minh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh Finance Department, and Le Duc Tho, a former Party secretary of Ben Tre Province. Mai Thi Hong Hanh, director of Xuyen Viet Oil, and her subordinate Nguyen Thi Nhu Phuong, are also arrested for violations related to company management and public asset use.

Xuyen Viet Oil, established in 2005, had its oil export-import license revoked by the trade ministry in August due to multiple violations of oil distribution regulations in its Central Highlands markets.
