Former central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, facing six counts of fraud and corruption charges in Nigeria, has been released on bail by a court. Emefiele, suspended from his role in June and pleading not guilty, was granted bail with a 300 million naira bond and two sureties owning properties in Abuja’s Maitama district. The judge, Hamza Muazu, ordered Emefiele to deposit his travel documents and remain in Abuja during the proceedings. The ex-bank chief, who unsuccessfully ran for the presidency last year, fell out of favor after overseeing a criticized exchange rate system and resigned in August. Charges against him have been reduced from a 20-count indictment.
