A woman from Waynesville is facing federal charges for allegedly embezzling over $1.5 million in just five months while working at Silver Bluff, an assisted living and nursing facility in Bethel.
Amy Elizabeth Curry, who served as the office manager and bookkeeper at Silver Bluff, is accused of making 154 fraudulent transfers from a Silver Bluff account to at least five different bank accounts controlled by herself and her then-boyfriend. She began her job at Silver Bluff in July 2022 and reportedly started embezzling money in December of that year. The embezzlement continued until it was discovered in April 2023.
The first known transfer was for $5,000 into the Chime banking account of her then-boyfriend, referred to as J.C. in the indictment. Over the following five months, Curry allegedly carried out 153 more transfers to various accounts, including her own Chime account, her State Employee’s Credit Union account, a Wells Fargo account, a Woodforest Bank account, and others. The total amount embezzled is alleged to be $1,518,771.
On March 11, 2023, Curry reportedly used the embezzled funds to purchase a 2020 Ford F-150 for $51,676. She made an initial payment of $5,000 from her State Employees Credit Union account and paid the remaining amount two days later with a cashier’s check from another State Employees Credit Union account.
During the investigation, authorities seized several items, including the F-150, a 2020 Kia Optima, a 2023 Nissan Maxima, a 2023 Polaris RZR, and $117,867.49 from four bank accounts.
Curry now faces federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering. If convicted, the wire fraud charge could result in a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. The money laundering charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. Additionally, she could face a forfeiture money judgment for the amount she allegedly embezzled.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Asheville will handle the prosecution of the case. The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office initially investigated the crime before turning it over to the FBI.
